With the second round of the 2026 March Madness about to enter its final set of games tonight, the tournament is shaping up quite nicely as we await our top sixteen teams ahead of the next round of the campaign.
So far, a total of eight teams, namely, Michigan, Michigan State, Duke, Houston, Texas, Illinois, Nebraska, and Arkansas, have successfully booked their place in the Sweet Sixteen phase of the tournament, with eight more names set to join the list soon.
With the Sweet Sixteen stage of the competition set to begin this Thursday, let’s take a look at which teams have historically qualified the most amount of times for the pre-quarterfinals.
Teams With The Most Sweet Sixteen Appearances
1. Kentucky Wildcats (45 Appearances)
A historically rich basketball program, it’s no surprise that the Wildcats top this list with a record number of 45 appearances, surpassing all of their counterparts with quite a margin. This season too, they continue to be one of the favorites to once again play the sweet sixteen as they face Iowa State tonight, hoping to get their overall count to 46.
2. North Carolina Tar Heels (36 Appearances)
With 36 Sweet Sixteen appearances, the Tar Heels occupy the second spot on the list, showcasing how consistent they’ve been in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, they won’t be adding to their tally of 36 this season anymore after losing their first-round fixture against the VCU Rams with a scoreline of 82-78.
3. UCLA Bruins (36 Appearances)
UCLA is the joint second program with the most appearances, sitting pretty at 36. They could very well surpass this number tonight, provided they emerge triumphant over the UConn Huskies.
4. Duke Blue Devils (35 Appearances)
After annihilating the TCU Horned Frogs with a scoreline of 81-58, the Blue Devils secured their 35th Sweet Sixteen appearance in the history of the competition. This victory also made them the third-biggest team in terms of Sweet Sixteen appearances, and it won’t come as a surprise if they go all the way this season to a natty.
5. Kansas Jayhawks (31 Appearances)
While the Jayhawks are yet to play their second-round game of the 2026 campaign against St. John’s, they currently sit with a total of 31 Sweet Sixteen appearances in the history of the competition. Out of the 31 appearances that the side has managed to garner, 11 of those have come under the stewardship of current head coach Bill Self.
6. Louisville Cardinals (24 Appearances)
One of the most consistent programs of March Madness, the Cardinals have managed to amass a total of 24 appearances in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the competition. They had the opportunity to increase that number until last night, when they bowed out of the competition courtesy of a 77-69 loss to Michigan State.
7. Syracuse Orange (24 Appearances)
Equaling the Cardinals’ appearance record, the Syracuse Orange too have garnered a total of 24 appearances in all of March Madness, making them one of the most prolific sides in terms of competition legacy. A major part of the program’s success could be attributed to their legendary head coach Jim Boeheim, who has helped the orange secure a Sweet Sixteen berth 20 times.
8. Michigan State (23 Appearances)
The Spartans, after their last night’s win over Louisville, entered the history books as they booked a Sweet Sixteen berth for the 23rd time in the history of the tournament. It sure looks like the program is in good hands under current head coach Tom Izzo. Izzo has helped the Michigan-based program make the Sweet Sixteen a total of 16 times.
9. Indiana Hoosiers (22 Appearances)
The Hoosiers have been amongst the last 16 teams for a total of 22 times. However, in recent times, the team hasn’t been able to replicate the same consistency as before, with their last Sweet Sixteen appearance coming back in 2016.
10. Arizona Wildcats (21 Appearances)
Arizona caps off our list with a total of 21 appearances in all of March Madness. They could very well secure a Sweet Sixteen spot for the 22nd time tonight as they face Utah State in their second-round fixture.
