Dan Hurley is no stranger to trash talk. He is often at the receiving end of abusive chants from opponent crowds. Something similar reportedly happened when he walked out ahead of UConn’s clash with Rick Pitino’s St. John’s. The teams met for the Big East supremacy at the iconic Madison Square Garden on Friday night.
Ever since Pitino took the reins of the St. John’s Red Storm program, the Hall of Fame coach has made massive progress. Pitino led them to their first Conference title win after 25 years in 2025. This season, the UConn Huskies have been in impressive form. Before the game against St. John’s, they had a 18-game winning streak.
As for Pitino and company, they have won some big games and look like a strong team after an impressive conference and overall record. Despite losing five games, St. John’s is unbeaten in conference play. Huskies, on the other hand, have lost only one game so far.
Dan Hurley and Rick Pitino are two completely different coaches. In terms of their gameplay, nature, behavior, and off-court interviews as well, both coaches differ. Hurley is often despised for his actions. He is intense, passionate, and is never shy to show his emotions. This often puts him in the line of fire when it comes to opposing crowds and fans.
When Hurley entered Madison Square Garden, and even in between the game, St. John’s crowd erupted with “f*** Dan Hurley” chants; nothing that would faze Hurley one bit.
Fans Slam Dan Hurley For Repeated On-Court Actions Against Referee
Just like many times previously, Hurley received a lot of heat from the fans for shouting and unloading on the referees. Fans online shared their reactions.
“When are refs gonna just throw Dan Hurley out the game the same way they throw Draymond out?” One fan said.
“Refs look for fights with Dan Hurley. Refs are scared of Rick Pitino,” another noticed.
“Here comes the Dan Hurley meltdown at the refs,” one fan commented.
“Why are the refs so tolerant of Dan Hurley’s antics. He’s quite a bore,” another claimed.
“Dan Hurley cry’s for calls legit every single down time the floor, guy is a clown,” another trolled.
