Michael Malone’s joining North Carolina brought some hope for the program’s future. However, he is now experiencing a string of rejections in search of his coaching staff. UNC had a tough time replacing Hubert Davis, and now filling up the coaching staff with the right people looks like a real challenge.
Former Providence head coach Kim English was touted to become the assistant coach for the Tar Heels. It looked certain that Malone would have a capable coach in his team. However, things have taken a turn for the worse.
“Sources: Kim English has informed UNC officials that he’s decided not to pursue an assistant coach position at North Carolina. English is the former head coach at Providence College and George Mason,” insider Pete Thamel reported.
After Hubert Davis was fired by North Carolina, the Tar Heels had a difficult time landing their next head coach. Finally, Michael Malone was brought on from a long list of top-tier considerations, which included national champion Dusty May, Billi Donovan, TJ Otzelberger, Jerry Stackhouse, and Ben McCollum.
The tentative list also included Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, Alabama’s Nate Oats, Saint Louis’ Mark Byington, and even the Celtics’ Brad Stevens. However, many high-profile coaches removed themselves from consideration and declined the opportunity to coach the Tar Heels. Tensions were running high, and there was a sense of desperation in the UNC management.
North Carolina’s transfer portal activity for a rebuild under Michael Malone
The team looks bleak as of now. Caleb Wilson, the standout freshman from the 2025-26 season, has declared for the NBA draft. Seth Trimble and Elijah Davis have completed their graduation.
As for others, Derek Dixon has committed to Arizona, Luka Bogavac joined Oklahoma State, Jayden High to USF, and Jonathan Powell to Pitt. James Brown and Ivan Matlekovic also entered the transfer portal. Things got worse when 5-star recruit Dylan Mingo reopened his recruitment after almost joining Michael Malone.
However, there is some respite for UNC. Isaiah Denis withdrew from the transfer portal and announced his return. Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young, Evan Smith, and John Holbrook have also decided to return to the Tar Heels. UNC is now targeting top-tier transfers, including an undisclosed $1.1 million recruit.
