Mark Pope has gone on a recruiting spree at Kentucky that’s seen Milan Momcilovic and, most recently, Ryan Hampton join the Wildcats. But it appears his ultimate aim is to bring in the top recruit in the 2027 class in the form of Marcus Spears Jr.
And Pope’s attempt to bring in Spears Jr. might be catching some traction, as Ryan Hampton’s personal relationship with the teenager could play a major role in where he ends up. The duo are cousins and seem to spend a significant amount of time together, as can be seen from the fishing trip they went on with a group.
Standing at 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighing around 210 pounds, Marcus Spears Jr. is the No. 1 recruit in the 2027 class, along with being first cousins with Ryan Hampton, who recently committed to the Kentucky Wildcats after visiting there.
Spears Jr. already has an offer from Kentucky, but holds significant leverage by being the top recruit in his class, with other offers available from programs such as Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, and several others.
Pope Doesn’t Want A Repeat Of Tyran Stokes Failure
Serious questions began to be asked of Kentucky head coach Mark Pope after he failed to bring in a player he was chasing for a significant amount of time in the form of the no. 1 recruit in the 2026 class, Tyran Stokes.
Knowing he held all the cards, Stokes kept Kentucky waiting, often teasing the Big Blue Nation (BBN) about his arrival, before committing to Kansas at the very last moment, leaving Mark Pope in a tough situation.
Pope had laid it all on the line to recruit Stokes and took significant flak for missing out on the teenager, but has since made up ground by bringing in Milan Momcilovic.
To avoid a similar situation, Pope and the Kentucky staff will hope that Marcus Spears Jr. plays ball early, and a deal can get over the line.
