Former Kentucky Target Rob Wright Explains Why He Returned to BYU

BYU point guard Rob Wright III is returning to Provo after a brief stint at Baylor. He entered the transfer portal and had many believing that he was going to Kentucky, but he ultimately ended up going back to the Cougars. This soon led many to ask why he chose to go back.

During a preseason press conference on June 16, the 6-foot-1 guard admitted to having visited Kentucky, but he also stated that in truth, he just wanted to go back to BYU.

“I did end up taking a visit to Kentucky,” he told reporters. “I was there for like a day, and then the second day I just came back to the airport… ’cause I just wanted to go back to BYU. That was my mindset the whole time.”

He noted that “the timeline wasn’t coming together” and was encouraged by BYU staff to explore his options, visiting Kentucky and eventually ending up back at his old school.

As Wright noted, he just spent a day in Kentucky before eventually deciding to go back to Provo.

BYU Coach Kevin Young Has High Expectations For Rob Wright

Rob Wright will be a good fit for his return at BYU, with the Cougars needing a point guard for next season. Head coach Kevin Young also spoke out and stated that he has some high hopes for his returning point guard, saying that Wright has matured since he first left Provo.

“I think he’s going to be the best point guard in college basketball as we head into this next season,” he said. “I really was impressed with his level of improvement from his freshman year to his sophomore year, particularly in our style of play, and I think he’s really matured.”

The coach added that he believes that Rob Wright is actually ready for a bigger role and stated that what happened during his recruiting was just the “byproduct of the way that the system is set up at the moment.”
