John Calipari Shares Heartwarming Moment With Karl-Anthony Towns’ Dad After Knicks Victory

John Calipari was in attendance as the New York Knicks shocked the world with a tremendous comeback in game 4 of the NBA Finals, eventually beating the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 with a last gasp winning moment.

Calipari was among those in shock as the camera panned to him towards the end of the game, with OG Anunoby sending Madison Square Garden into raptures. But it was Karl-Anthony Towns who Calipari was perhaps most excited to see, with the two going way back.

Calipari was the head coach at the Kentucky Wildcats when Karl-Anthony Towns played there in the 2014-15 season. Being one of the standout players, KAT eventually went up to the NBA draft. The Knicks vs Spurs game provided an opportunity for Calipari to not just hang out again with his former player, but also with his dad.

“With Karl Sr. after the biggest comeback in NBA finals history!,” Calipari wrote on social media platform X with a picture of the duo at MSG.

Karl Sr. and Calipari would have watched on with pride as Karl-Anthony Towns showed grit and resilience, contributing to his team’s crucial win by adding 13 points in 26 minutes of play on the court. With game 5 approaching in a few days, KAT will undoubtedly be one of the key players for the Knicks again as they chase a long overdue NBA Championship.

The Bond Between John Calipari and Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns credits John Calipari and his tactics at Kentucky for a lot of the success he’s had in the NBA, highlighting that it prepared him for what was to come at a higher level.

“[Coach Calipari] ran a tight ship,” Towns said on the Network with Rich Kleiman last October.

“Being able to be in that system … it was always about making the Kentucky experience much more difficult than the NBA experience on purpose.”

KAT also spoke about Calipari’s platoon system during that year’s NCAA Tournament which eventually led to him being the number 1 pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

“I’ll never forget, they told me the method to the madness, so that when I got to the NBA, I wouldn’t be shocked by anything, and I would find it easier than it was being [at Kentucky] in that one year.”
