Providence Coaching Search: Top 5 Candidates Who Could Replace Kim English Ft. Joe Gallo

Kim English joined the Providence Friars in 2023 after nearly a decade-long coaching career. He started with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in 2015 as an assistant and had short stints with Colorado and Tennessee.

English’s first head coaching stint was with the George Mason Patriots in 2021. He maintained a winning record, 34-29 overall and 18-16 in the conference, with the Patriots after his two-season run, but it didn’t live up to expectations.

His first season with the Friars turned out to be his best in the three-season run. This season, however, English’s team had a disappointing run, winning just 15 games and losing 18 overall. They won only seven games in the conference and lost 13.

The Friars recently fired him and released an official statement thanking English for his time.

“We appreciate Kim and his staff for their efforts over the past three seasons leading our men’s basketball team,” said PC Athletic Director Steve Napolillo in the release. “We wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

There were rumors about the potential firing of English for the last few weeks. Now that the decision is official, the Friars will have to find a replacement. There are several coaches who would be best suited for the program. Here are the top five candidates.

Top 5 Candidates who Can Replace Kim English

    Joe Gallo

Joe Gallo has been the head coach of the Merrimack Warriors since 2016. He represented the Warriors during his collegiate career from 2000 to 2004. The following year, he joined his alma mater as an assistant.

Gallo’s team is the number one seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He holds an impressive 184-124 overall record, 23-11 this season. If the Friars can bring him in, he might be able to reshape their identity.

    Porter Moser

The Oklahoma Sooners head coach is another great candidate for the Friars. Porter Moser has over three decades of coaching experience. He has been with the Oklahoma Sooners since 2021 and has a 91-73 overall record.

If Oklahoma doesn’t bring him back next season, he could be Friar’s target.

    Luke Murray

Luke Murray started his coaching career as an assistant in 2008. He has since worked with Arizona and Louisville and is currently an assistant with the UConn Huskies. He doesn’t have any head coaching experience on his resume, but having worked with Dan Hurley for years, he might be a good bet for Providence.

    Josh Schertz

Josh Schertz wouldn’t be the easiest name to sign, but he can instill the winning mentality in the Providence Friars that they’ve been looking for. He’s currently the head coach of the Saint Louis Billikens and boasts an impressive 46-19 record.

    Bryan Hodgson

The 2026 American Conference Coach of the Year, Bryan Hodgson, became head coach for the first time in 2023 with the Arkansas State Red Wolves. After two seasons, he joined the South Florida Bulls.

This season, his team has secured the number one seed with a 23-8 record. The bigger question in this scenario is whether the Friars would be able to get him.
