Auburn’s Johni Broome Named National Player of the Year by College Hoops Today

The Auburn Tigers men’s basketball team is having a fantastic season, with many considering them the best team in college basketball right now. Their star player, Johni Broome, was announced as College Hoops Today’s National Player of the Year to add to their success. However, this remarkable achievement has sparked some controversy. Why is that?

Understanding Broome’s Path to National Player of the Year

Broome has made a name for himself in Auburn basketball. He was recently named College Hoops Today’s National Player of the Year. In his third and final season with the Tigers, Broome has become one of the top players in college basketball. Before his success at Auburn, he was a three-star recruit who played two seasons at Morehead State, a smaller school in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Before transferring to Auburn, Broome would face them while playing for Morehead State. This experience ended up influencing his decision to join the Tigers. Reflecting on that moment, Broome described the atmosphere as unforgettable. “It was kind of crazy,” Broome recalled during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay. “I remember it was the first game of my sophomore year, and it was rocking.”

When it came time to decide on the transfer portal, the electric environment he experienced in November played a key role in his choice. “It kind of forced me to come this way,” he admitted.

    Why Are Fans Upset?

With every award in sports, there are always fans who disagree. Many believe Duke’s standout forward, Cooper Flagg, deserved the honor in this case. Flagg, the former No. 1 recruit and projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, showed tremendously this season. He’s averaging 19.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.

He’s shooting 49% from the field and an impressive 38% from 3-point range, while the Blue Devils are currently sitting at 28-3. So why didn’t he receive the award? Here’s a breakdown of College Hoops Today’s statement on their website.

When referring to Broome, it stated, “The 6-10 Broome is the best player on the best team in college basketball.” Broome played a key role in helping Auburn win the SEC regular-season title, with 14 teams still in the mix for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In contrast, the ACC, where Flagg and Duke play, “only has three teams — Duke, Louisville, and Clemson.” The level of competition Broome faced was a significant factor in his selection.

How Does This Affect The Naismith Player of the Year Race?

Broome’s outstanding season has made the Naismith Player of the Year race much closer, though Flagg is still a favorite. As ESPN’s Jeff Borzello said, “Flagg’s overall impact, especially on a Duke team poised for a deep tournament run, gives him the edge,” pointing out the importance of team success in these awards.

However, Andy Katz of NCAA.com focused on Broome’s performance, saying, “Broome’s consistent dominance in the paint, coupled with his impressive stat line, makes him a legitimate contender. His ability to impact both ends of the floor is undeniable.” These comments show that while Flagg is still the favorite, Broome’s outstanding play has made the Naismith race far from decided.

Broome’s standout season has made him a serious contender for the Naismith Player of the Year award, while Flagg has also had an exceptional year. Flagg has been a key player for Duke, with impressive stats and helping lead his team to a strong record.

On the other hand, Broome’s performance has been crucial in Auburn’s SEC title run. Both players have significantly impacted their teams, and it will be interesting to see who ultimately takes home the award.
