The North Carolina Tar Heels and head coach Michael Malone secured the commitment of former Utah and Fairleigh Dickinson guard Terrence Brown through the transfer portal, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.
Despite having a breakout season with the Utes, Brown announced his plans to enter the transfer portal. Several blue blood programs, including Kansas and Kentucky, were after him, and ultimately, it was new head coach Malone’s UNC who won the 6-foot-3 star’s commitment.
This past season, the junior player averaged 19.9 points per game, third in Big 12 scoring behind AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson. He also recorded a career-best 3.8 assists per game along with 1.4 steals. He shot 45%, including a career-best 32.7 percent in 3-point shooting.
Apart from Brown, Malone has also managed to land Virginia Tech star freshman guard Neoklis Avdalas from the transfer portal. Avdalas averaged 12.1 points, 4.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Hokies.
Malone’s transfer portal spree hasn’t stopped yet. The Tar Heels will host No. 1 overall portal player Juke Harris from Wake Forest.
Michael Malone and UNC Scouts Going Overseas in Search of Talent
After replacing Hubert Davis as UNC’s head coach, Michael Malone is in the process of finalizing his roster for the 2026-27 season. While he has managed to retain and add talent during this transfer portal, UNC is still searching for options to replace center Henri Veesaar.
According to Inside Carolina, Malone and coaching staff member Chuck Martin are off to Spain to scout Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje and Sayon Keita, along with other international prospects.
Boumtje, a 7-foot center, is part of the 2027 class. Meanwhile, Keita, another 7-foot center, is part of the 2026 class.
This is despite UNC filling the center role with the commitment of Cade Bennerman on Monday. However, he appears more as a depth option than a starter. He redshirted last season at Northwestern and has four years of eligibility remaining. His 7-foot-5 wingspan should come in handy for the Tar Heels.
Malone is leaving no stones unturned during this offseason, where he hopes to construct a roster so deep and talented that the program finally makes a deep run in March Madness. Under Hubert Davis, the program suffered back-to-back first-round exits in the NCAA Tournament.
