North Carolina Coach Search: Top 5 Candidates Who Could Replace Hubert Davis

Hubert Davis’ time at North Carolina seems to be at an end. Rumors that his weekly radio show on a local radio station have made the odds of his being fired from the Tar Heels go up. Their defeat at the hands of VCU in the NCAA Tournament first round put Davis in the hot seat.

Here are some options to replace him.

Top 5 Candidates Who Could Replace Hubert Davis

#5 Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics GM)

This is a bit of a move out of left field. Stevens isn’t currently a coach, but rather the current president of basketball operations and de facto general manager for the Boston Celtics. He last coached in 2021, having been the Celtics head coach between 2013 and 2021. Before that, he coached at the collegiate level at Butler between 2007 and 2013. However, he is considered the architect of Boston’s recent success, and boosters would look kindly upon his hiring.

#4 T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa State HC)

Otzelberger has had a fairly successful time with the Cyclones, taking them to the NCAA Tournament in five seasons straight. His entire stint has been at Iowa State. They’re still alive in the current Big Dance, with them playing the Sweet 16 round against Tennessee this Friday. He has proven he can create resilient offenses and defenses, with his regular defensive attitude being compounded by a top-20 offense this season.

    #3 Mark Byington (Vanderbilt HC)

Byington has made the Vanderbilt Commodores basketball team relevant again after more than a decade. While they fell to John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks, they did reach their third-ever SEC Tournament final earlier this month. In just one season, he took them to the NCAA Tournament, and in two, he made them bonafied SEC Tournament contenders.

    #2 Nate Oats (Alabama HC)

While this season they fell unexpectedly in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament to Ole Miss, Nate Oats’ Alabama has become a staple of the conference since he took over the Tuscaloosa program in 2019. In seven seasons, they have made the NCAA Tournament six times and won the SEC regular season and tournament twice. He would be an upgrade for North Carolina.

    #1 Todd Golden (Florida HC)

Todd Golden has turned Florida into one of the best programs in the nation, notwithstanding their surprising elimination by Iowa in the second round this year. Nonetheless, the Gators won the national title last season and the SEC regular season this year. Florida also won the 2025 SEC Tournament. However, it might be time for Golden to look for new horizons, as Iowa showed.
