Nils Machowski Leaves UCF, Headed to Wofford

When Nils Machowski left UCF you’d expect that he would eventually end up at another major program. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello first reported the transfer. However, someone forgot to tell Machowski, as he hopped into the portal and jumped out at Wofford College. During his career as a Knight in Orlando, the German-born shooting guard played 56 games.

Within those, he started just nine of them. As a result, those 12 minutes per game just didn’t seem to work for him in 2024. Especially as a shooting guard, when shooting resides literally in his positional name.

Despite parts of his team leaving, which includes Machowski, UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins offered this sentiment to Orlando Sentinel writer Matt Murschel:

“I had no hard feelings about guys entering the portal,” Dawkins said. “Guys are entering the portal for a myriad of reasons. Guys are checking their value. Guys are in the portal to see what opportunities may be better for them and other places, and that’s fine. That’s just the world we’re in now. I held nothing against guys who put their names in the portal.”

“Even before the tournament, we said that before anyone ever jumped in the portal. They elected to continue to play and kept their word about that,” Dawkins explained. “For me, you know, I counted on them being able to do that, and they did.”

    Wofford College Basketball Team Information

For the last 30 seasons of Wofford basketball, the Terriers, from coaches to players, mightily try to build a sustained winner. Since 2009, the team can lay claim to six NCAA tournament appearances. That resonates through Spartanburg, South Carolina, home of the WC Campus.

Playing in the Southern Conference, the program makes small inroads on the road to continuous respectability. Coached by former Kentucky reserve Dwight Perry, the team pushes forward.

This season, Wofford finished sixth in the conference, yet going on a magical run allowed them to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky Sports Report’s Tyler Thompson provided background here:

“Perry finished his Kentucky career with five points over 19 games in three seasons, making the SEC Academic Honor Roll in two seasons. He got his coaching start as an intern at Stanford and joined Shaka Smart’s staff at VCU, where he earned his master’s degree in sports leadership.”

“From there, Wofford hired him as an assistant coach in 2019. Two years later, he was promoted to associate head coach and in December 2022, was thrust into the role of interim head coach when Jay McAuley stepped down.”

So, what does Machowski encounter during his start at his new school? First, he will start. Perry lost his top five scorers, one of which hopped in the transfer portal.

As a result, the new two guard will need to jump into the fray immediately to provide a solid scoring touch. Next, just to build off the previous sentence, expect double-digit scoring on double-digit shot attempts.

Without a doubt, the team will most certainly struggle with the obscene amount of turnover. Lastly, teams cannot shake or rattle Wachowski who played basketball at the highest collegiate level.

Machowski probably won’t drop 20 points a night. Moreover, the team will not snake up on anyone, due in part to a miraculous postseason run just to gain an automatic bid. Regardless of that, the junior shooter should evolve into one of the most exciting players in mid-major guards.

Due to the growing confidence in his shot, Machowski can turn Wofford into a must-watch basketball.
