Michael Malone’s appointment as North Carolina’s men’s basketball head coach has been one of the more talked-about stories in college sports recently, but it clearly goes beyond the college game.
After all, Malone’s strong coaching pedigree and background in the NBA made him a target for pretty much every pro franchise, with funds expected to be more and the payoff perhaps even greater.
So when Malone took the job at UNC, there were certainly some heads scratched in the NBA fraternity, primarily wondering why some teams who clearly needed a change at the top, chose to overlook someone as experienced as Mike Malone.
Well, it appears we now know why the Portland Trail Blazers didn’t go for him. New owner Tom Dundon may be to blame for Portland’s inability to grab Malone, and it wasn’t because they didn’t want him. They just didn’t pay enough.
Malone’s current salary of $7.5M at UNC means most college teams probably would have never stood a chance, but since the Tar Heels pride themselves on their basketball program, it made sense to make the cash splash.
That being said, Portland’s bizarre $4M offer is more puzzling. In the NBA, you definitely need the best of the best coaching your teams, and that’s just not enough. And fans tend to agree.
Another fan did their research and explained the sketchy past behind Tom Dundon.
Others questioned why Damian Lillard chose to return to a franchise now known best for being cheap.
Not the First Time Fans Have Expressed Anger Towards Dundon
Dundon’s cheap antics haven’t gone down well with the Portland fans. They’ve been questioning the behavior for a while now but to no avail.
It’s clear he has no public support and barely into his tenure as the owner, he could be facing a mutiny from his own public.
Michael Malone should probably consider himself lucky he chose to go elsewhere than get caught up in the mess that is Portland at the moment.
