Mark Pope Lists Biggest Frustrations With Kentucky Squad Months After Early NCAA Tournament Exit

Mark Pope seems to have turned a corner after the successful capture of Milan Momcilovic after the Iowa State transfer’s withdrawal from the NBA draft, but the ghosts of the past would definitely still be haunting the Kentucky head coach as the new season approaches.

One of his major struggles came with his squad during the NCAA tournament back in March, where Pope and Kentucky were left shell shocked after a second round exit in the tournament. On that day, it was Momcilovic’s Iowa State who dealt a major blow to Pope and his crew, with Momcilovic scoring 20 points himself, leaving many to wonder if a new head coach might be in the offing in Lexington.

But Pope survived, and has now spoken about the challenges at the time, when asked about his biggest frustrations by Jon Rothstein, who questioned the 53-year-old about the roster trouble he faced in the light of several injuries, and what else held them back.

“Listen, I think all of the roster changes, it’s not just losing those two positions, but then it’s everyone else having to learn the game out of position,” Pope said.

“And so, there was a lot centered on that, but again, I was proud of the things that these guys did accomplish.”

Mark Pope Recovers After Being Dealt Several Blows

The pressure was on Mark Pope after the early exit from the NCAA tournament, but it compounded after Kentucky missed out on the no. 1 recruit in the 2026 class in Tyran Stokes.

Pope had been trying his level best to recruit Stokes to the Wildcats, but despite the teenager stringing the college and its fans along for a long period of time, eventually decided to join Kansas. Since then, however, Pope has bounced back, recruiting Milan Momcilovic, and then securing the commitment of four-star recruit Ryan Hampton, with eyes on the top recruits of the 2027 class next.
