Mark Pope’s Kentucky has suffered a lot of disappointment in the off season. They have missed out on numerous recruits and have had a sub-par transfer portal. Players have visited Kentucky but not many haven’t committed. $22 million NIL budget, rumored to be continued from last season, is apparently not enough to attract new signings.
Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Pope recently acknowledged an embarrassing trait of his program regarding their current struggles in the 2026 offseason. On Wednesday, May 6, coach Pope answered a plethora of questions from fans and spectators on his X/Twitter page.
One fan asked Pope whether he believes that recruits are using Kentucky as a leverage to demand more NIL money from other schools. This was the rather unfortunate consensus from the transfer portal and Mark Pope believes that too.
“ Is Kentucky being used by players to leverage for more NIL? Yes. We’re the biggest brand in basketball,” Pope said.
Given the responses on both Pope’s video on X/Twitter page and the aforementioned post on Instagram, it seems as though college hoops fans and spectators are divided on his claim. While it is true that Pope’s Wildcats are one of the most well-known programs in the sport, onlookers argue that other programs possess a bigger brand than that of Kentucky’s.
Nevertheless, the Wildcats recruitment team has struggled this year, as shown through their subpar No. 13-ranking in the current 24/7 Sports 2026 Transfer Basketball Team Rankings.
Mark Pope asserted promise from 2026-27 roster despite missing out on Tyran Stokes
One of the biggest misses by coach Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats recruitment team this offseason is when they were not able to land the top recruit coming out of the class of 2026, Tyran Stokes.
Stokes chose to commit to coach Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks, even after Pope exerted extreme means to recruit him such as offering him an enormous amount of NIL money. Still, Pope asserts that his roster next year will be well-put-together.
“This year, we were chasing a generational talent, and we fell a little short, but we weren’t sitting on our hands. We put together a roster that we are going to love watching, crush it in Rupp Arena,” Pope shared. (0:44)
