The NCAA has taken a lot of hits recently from fans and also some of the biggest names in the sport. Head coaches like John Calipari and Rick Pitino have made their voices heard. Both have openly shown their discontent about the lack of regulations in college basketball at the moment.
Other names, such as Tom Izzo and Matt Painter, have also made valid points about player eligibility and the transfer portal. People have complained about teams recruiting players who have already graduated. Some players have returned to college basketball after failing to make a mark in the NBA.
“Tommy Izzo, Mark Few, there are a bunch of us that are just, we got no rules,” Calipari had mentioned some of the coaches who would share his opinion.
Calipari had an outburst about the Baylor Bears signing an NBA draftee, James Nnaji. He added that things will get difficult for high school kids if there are no age restrictions. Pitino made a similar argument, saying it no longer seems like college basketball.
After these outbursts, the NCAA president, Charlie Baker, made a huge announcement. He said that the NCAA will stop granting eligibility to prospective or returning student-athletes who have signed an NBA contract. However, the aftermath now includes a legal action against the NCAA from one such returning student-athlete.
Current G-League player and former Alabama big man Charles Bediako is suing the NCAA in an effort to return to play college basketball for Alabama. Bediako has already enrolled in classes at Alabama and is attempting to return to the court this season.
