Teenagers are normally skittish about praising their parents. Not Syracuse’s Kiyan Anthony, who hopped on Instagram on Monday to praise his mother’s appearance at the 2026 Met Gala.
Anthony’s mother, La La, wore a copper dress with a pattern clearly inspired by flowers, aligning with the theme of this year’s event, Fashion is Art.
“The showstopper,” Kiyan commented.
La La said she paid close attention to detail to get her look just right.
“I wanted my look to feel like a piece of art that you could literally hang up on a wall—and for me, that meant focusing on the details,” she told Vogue. “The look features intricate embroidery and beading that adds dimension and texture. Getting that texture was a complicated process, just like many great works of art.”
Kiyan Anthony is the only child of La La and Carmelo Anthony. He was born in 2007, four years after his parents started dating in 2003. La La and Carmelo married in 2010 and divorced in 2021, citing irreconcilable differences. They had been living apart since at least 2017, and had gone through several failed reconciliation attempts.
Kiyan Anthony set to return for his sophomore season at Syracuse
For a moment, Kiyan Anthony’s future with the Orange was in doubt as the coach who brought him to Upstate New York, Adrian Autry, was fired after a second straight disappointing season. However, Anthony confirmed he will remain with Syracuse, now under Gerry McNamara’s leadership.
The choice of a new head coach could be what prompted the sophomore player to commit to a second season with the Orange. He shared a post on his Instagram feed with the following caption in mid-April:
“The Right Way 🍊,”
McNamara was a teammate of Carmelo Anthony in the 2002-03 national championship-winning team.
Kiyan, meanwhile, will look to become a starter in his second season of college basketball, having played in 29 games (starting in two) and averaged 8 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in his freshman year at Syracuse.
