Kingston Flemings Gets All the Praise as he Pips Hakeem Olajuwon to Impressive Houston Feat

The Houston Cougars have a new name to be proud of besides the greats Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. Kingston Flemings has become the first freshman in Cougars history to be named an All-American (2nd Team).

Olajuwon became a consensus first-team All-American in 1984 (junior year) while Flemings achieved All-American status in his first season. Drexler, Rob Williams and Craig Upchurch were other youngest Cougars to receive All-America status.

This season, Flemings has averaged 16.1 points, 5.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game. His stats rank among the Big 12 Top-20 leaders. He has shot 47.6 percent, including 38.7 percent from behind the arc. He has had 12 20-point games, including three consecutive in late January.

Flemings has set a new Houston single-season freshman scoring record by dropping 594 points in 2025-26, breaking Williams’ 456 points in the 1979-80 season. In terms of scoring average, he comes second.

He also has the school’s single-game scoring record after he dropped a career-high 42 points on 15-of-26 shooting against Texas Tech on January 24, breaking Williams’ 34-point record set against Rice in 1980. Overall, no matter the class, Flemings was only the 12th Cougar to score 40+ points in a game.

Kingston Flemings Reveals His NBA Role Model

Kingston Flemings is a point guard and has a special appreciation for another elite NBA point guard.

During his interview with Maanav’s Sports Talk on YouTube, Flemings revealed that he looks up to Derrick Rose. The Chicago Bulls picked Rose first overall in 2008 NBA draft and he has nothing but impressed in his initial years by winning the Rookie of the Year and MVP (in 2011). He has three All-Star selections and a complete package a point guard should have.

“My favorite player was D-Rose, so I looked up to him. I wore No. 1 my whole life up until here cause of D-Rose. He was always my favorite player,” Flemings said. “I loved watching D-Rose growing up. I had D-Rose’s shoes and everything like that.”

Flemings revealed that while he appreciates the games of elite point guards, he doesn’t particularly follow anyone or model his game after anyone.

“I kinda play my own game, I watch players, what they do on the court and reads they make, but I don’t really model my game after someone,” Flemings said.

Flemings has also shared that he likes Cade Cunningham and he wants him to be considered for the MVP.
