Following the Kansas Jayhawks’ second-round loss against the St. John’s Red Storm, it seemed like Bill Self’s tenure as head coach had come to an end. Self has had some health-related issues over the last few years, and he had said that he would discuss his future with his family.
On Wednesday, Self announced that he would return for another season with the Jayhawks. Self said that he was “focused and committed to Kansas” and he would continue to chase the National Championship.
The announcement has made Kansas fans very happy. On the other hand, the Kentucky fans wouldn’t be too pleased because Self’s return could take away their chances of landing Tyran Stokes.
Stokes is a consensus five-star recruit and is considered the top high school prospect of the 2026 class. He hasn’t committed to a program yet, though he has trimmed his list down. In October 2025, he announced his top five schools: Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Oregon, and USC.
The following month, Stokes trimmed his list down to just three programs: Kansas, Kentucky, and Oregon. He was expected to announce the McDonald’s All-American game on Tuesday.
Stokes likely delayed the announcement because Self hadn’t made it clear whether he would return with Kansas or not. Now that he is officially coming back, Stokes might announce his commitment.
As per ESPN’s Myron Medcalf, Stokes is likely to join the Kansas Jayhawks. However, there’s something that he has to do first.
“I think there’s an element with Kansas when it comes down to what is Bill Self going to do. No one really knows,” he said. “I mean, Bill Self said he’s gotta talk to his family about his future. So, I think that move could influence what Tyran Stokes ends up doing.”
It’ll be interesting to see if Bill Self’s return to Kansas kills Kentucky’s chances of landing the top-ranked recruit.
Bill Self is Back with “Renewed Clarity”
Last month, when Self said that he would discuss his coaching future with his family, fans thought that it was an early indication of his retirement. That would’ve left the Jayhawks without a head coach and with the responsibility of finding a suitable replacement.
After a week of uncertainty, Self announced that he was coming back “with renewed clarity and the ongoing support from our administration.”
“I look forward to seeing and hearing the best fans in college basketball next season at Allen Fieldhouse,” he said.
The ultimate goal hasn’t changed for Self and the Jayhawks. They are still looking for the next NCAA title.
