Was Braylon Mullins Originally Headed to Duke? Crucial 2024 Moment Emerges After March Madness Heroics

Braylon Mullins is the biggest hero in the UConn Huskies men’s basketball camp today. His clutch shot in the concluding moments of the Elite Eight matchup against the Duke Blue Devils has sent UConn to the Final Four.

Despite not doing well from the distance throughout the game, Mullins scored the biggest three-point shot of his career when his team needed it the most. For Duke, he is nothing short of a villain right now.

However, back in September 2024, if things had worked out in favor of Duke, they might’ve been the ones going to Indianapolis to face the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Final Four. Let’s understand why.

Following Mullins’ game-winning shot, basketball insider Adam Zagoria quoted his tweet from September 17, 2024. At the time, Mullins was visiting several teams to assess where he would start his college basketball career.

He had visited the North Carolina Tar Heels, and a visit to Tennessee was also on the cards for him. In between those two visits, Mullins was slated to visit the Duke Blue Devils.

“Class of 25 @mullins_braylon will no longer visit Duke but may still visit Tennessee, his HS coach tells me,” Zagoria’s tweet from 2024 read.

Fast forward to March 2026, and Mullins is the one who hit the 40-foot dagger three against Duke that brought their NCAA Tournament run to an end in the Elite Eight round. From being recruited by Duke and deciding not to visit, to hitting a career-highlight-worthy shot against the same team, Mullins’ basketball story is already taking shape.

Braylon Mullins Revealed the UConn Recruitment Pitch

Coming out of high school, Mullins was one of the best talents in his class, and everyone had their eyes locked on him. He was ranked a consensus top-25 prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. So, the interest around his name was genuine.

While he visited several programs before finalizing his decision, UConn made the pitch that stood out for him. After winning the game against Duke, Mullins revealed what UConn’s pitch to him was.

“When I was recruited, that was the pitch, ‘We’re gonna take you to Indy.’ And that was kind of a wrap-up moment for my official visit when I took a visit to UConn. So, in a way, I always knew in the back of my head,” he said.

The Final Four round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
