Kelvin Sampson lives and breathes the Houston Cougars, and its visible with the amount of time he’s spent with the program.
Sampson’s loyalty to the program has been reciprocated by the University, who has stuck with him through the tough times, such as now in the NIL era when the veteran coach has had run-ins with the NCAA about where the future of college basketball is going.
So here we are, then. With Houston still a contender for the top prize in college basketball, but with neighbors growing louder by the second, Sampson knows he has to get the troops in line and fight for every inch they can find.
The head coach was out doing just that at a Coaches’ Caravan event in Sugar Land, rallying the Houston faithful amid growing pressure from across the state.
Sampson can be heard saying – “I don’t know about this commuter school bullshit… We’re the University of Houston. We’re the University of Houston. Don’t you take a backseat to nobody. “Don’t talk to me about U of T. Or Texas A&M. We just played Texas A&M, right. How’d that go?
“Quit acting like these teams are up here. No, they’re not. You’re up here. Start acting like it. Start supporting this program.”
More Events to Come With Coaches’ Caravan
The Houston website lists more events with the Coaches’ Caravan for local crowds to visit, with May 14 listed for Webster, May 18 for Dallas, May 19 for Houston and May 21 scheduled in Austin, Texas.
Amid rising support and resources for the University of Texas and Texas A&M programs, Sampson’s rallying cry should bring the Houston fans together to support the rich history of the program and help them get back to the top.
