Kansas has been hit by a series of departures via the transfer portal. The latest to announce his exit from Bill Self’s program is guard Jamari McDowell, who entered shortly after the transfer portal opened. Despite this exodus, the Jayhawks are still the favorites to secure the commitment of No. 1-ranked high school prospect Tyran Stokes.
This has led fans to question Self’s ability to retain players, as he is also projected to lose freshman star Darryn Peterson to the NBA draft. Some even implied that the team is clearing the budget just to pay the No. 1 prospect, Tyran Stokes.
“Dang how much are they gonna pay stokes,” one person asked.
“Kansas is going to just be Tyran Stokes come November,” another person pointed out.
“Holy f**k we are going to have no one by Friday,” wondered another X user.
“This is ridiculous thats the entire team,” said one fan.
“College sports are cooked,” one individual commented.
“Nothing good about losing a player who actually cares about the name across his chest,” one person said.
McDowell averaged 3.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game on a 48.5% field goal percentage. He was a defensive presence for the Jayhawks, instrumental in some big wins.
Who Else Is Leaving Kansas Basketball?
The Kansas Jayhawks did well last season, making it all the way to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before getting eliminated by St. John’s. However, the team is set to lose its two biggest stars and a few key players.
The biggest name is leading scorer Darryn Peterson, who is expected to announce his entry to the NBA Draft soon. The other big name is power forward Flory Bidunga, who will be leaving via the transfer portal. He could also test the NBA waters by declaring for the draft.
Freshman Bryson Tiller and bench player Paul Mbiya round out the transfer portal departures, while seniors Melvin Council Jr., Tre White, Jayden Dawson and Nginyu Ngala have run out of eligibility.
