Texas Longhorns star Jordan Pope revealed his status for the Sweet Sixteen game against the Purdue Boilermakers.
When asked if he’s 100% sure to play in the game against Purdue, Pope told the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls, “Oh yeah, I am.” This means the Longhorns will be with their 6-foot-1, 180 lbs guard.
Moreover, Pope said he looks forward to guarding Purdue star Braden Smith, but his teammate Daiyln Swain shared that the guard’s responsibility on defense is not limited to one person only.
What Happened to Jordan Pope?
In the second round game against Gonzaga, Jordan Pope rolled his ankle. The injury occurred late in the game as he was seen hunching over and talking with the trainers during the timeout. He was also spotted limping after the game and was headed to the locker room.
Despite the injury, Pope stayed on the floor and finished the game. He later said he was “feeling fine” and expected to be ready soon.
“I’m feeling fine I’ll be ready for the Sweet 16,” Pope said.
Immediately in response to the injury, head coach Sean Miller said he thinks Pope would be fine as well.
“I understand he’ll be fine,” Miller said of Pope. “We don’t know enough right now, but we’ll certainly know this weekend.”
He added more on his injury on Wednesday.
“Yeah, first Jordan, he’s dealing with a lower leg situation,” Miller said. “We’re hopeful that he can — we’ve given him a lot of rest since our last game, and I think he’s really responding to it. We still had a pretty quick turnaround, all things considered, because of the distance between San Jose and Austin and traveling from Dayton to Portland and Portland back to Austin. But yeah, it’s nice to have a couple days in between. But everybody that’s playing has those same days, as well.”
Pope has been impressive in the March Madness so far. In the play-in win over NC State, he had five points, followed by 11 points against BYU and 17 points against Gonzaga on Saturday.
He is a key part of the lineup both on offense and defense, with him averaging 13.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest. He is shooting 36.9% from the 3-point range.
