Mark Pope might already be in business when it comes to recruiting players from the 2027 class, with top target Marcus Spears Jr. reportedly in his sights.
Pope and his staff have been scouting Spears for a while now, but with multiple offers on the table, there have been questions about the teenager’s preference for school and whether he feels Lexington is the right place for him. However, according to Kentucky beat writer Tristan Pharis, Big Blue Nation (BBN) can start getting excited about the possibility of landing the No. 1 recruit in the 2027 class.
“Things have been heating up between Kentucky and 2027 No. 1 overall recruit Marcus Spears Jr. I am told that the two sides are working to set up a visit,” Pharis tweeted. “Spears’ cousin, Ryan Hampton, committed to Kentucky earlier this month.”
Kentucky will be hoping that the commitment of Spears’ first cousin Ryan Hampton to the Wildcats earlier in the month sways Spears’ decision.
Mark Pope is Trying to Make Amends for an Earlier Recruiting Miss
Recruiting Marcus Spears Jr. is important to Mark Pope’s image. He famously missed out on Tyran Stokes, and took a lot of flak from Kentucky fans. Sealing the commitment of Ryan Hampton this month reduced some of the backlash.
That being said, if Kentucky can recruit Spears ahead of several other top programs, it can be another feather in the cap for Pope, whose own position has reportedly come under threat under the watchful gaze of new Kentucky AD, J Batt.
