After the Feb. 7 game against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, Duke Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer alleged that Duke staff members were “punched in the face” and trampled as fans stormed the court after the home team’s 71-68 win at Dean Smith Center.
The following Monday, during an Atlantic Coast Conference media call, Scheyer added to his accusations that one of his staff members suffered a bloody lip and was “disheveled” after being caught up in the court-storming but is “doing better” and “fine.”
This has erupted in a controversy with several reports coming out and saying that the allegations are untrue. Jeff Nieman, District Attorney for Chatham and Orange Counties in North Carolina, has also chimed in on the matter, stating that “There is zero evidence that anyone from Duke’s basketball program was “punched in the face” at the Smith Center last week.”
“Nor is there any evidence that a staffer was “trampled on the floor” or “in a complete brawl”, for that matter,” the DA added.
Despite contradictory reports, Scheyer is holding his ground, saying he knows what he saw but doesn’t want to dwell any more on it.
“Yeah, well, look, uh, I, I would like to focus on Syracuse, but I’ll, I’ll tell you, um, That I know what I saw and I know what happened with our staff after the game, and that’s the bottom line,” Scheyer said.
“And, uh, I’m not going to go and circle back or get into, uh, I don’t know what was said or wasn’t said or what people want to, you know, wanna, want to claim, uh, but I know what happened and I’m always going to support our staff being in those situations. And again, I could have even said more, and I’m not going to do that. Uh, but we’re moving on, uh, and, uh, really grateful for tonight’s win, but I don’t want to go back.”

Under the tweet from Jeff Nieman, fans shared their verdict, slamming coach Jon Scheyer for making false statements regarding alleged violence.
“Literally everyone knows Scheyer lied. That next-day interview with Field of 68 was downright embarrassing,” one fan pointed out.
“I’m not seeing any evidence in these replies. Just a lot of tears 😂” another added.
“Thanks for the follow through. A pleasant surprise. Scheyer should embarrassed,” another wrote.
“There is always done manufactured drama from Scheyer when his team loses. It’s a distraction. Front page off ESPN was all about the punch and not about dook losing,” one fan wrote.
“Jon Cryer should be charged with making false accusations, obstruction, and wasting community resources,” one fan added.
As it appears, most fans are convinced Jon Scheyer made wrong statements to take the focus away from their loss in the rivalry game.
