Dusty May’s Expected Departure Opens Door For Mark Pope To Recruit Top Michigan Target

Dusty May will reportedly be leaving Michigan to join the Dallas Mavericks, and the move is set to leave not just a hole in Michigan’s current team, but will probably have a major effect on their recruiting plans too.

Many recruits are likely to have been interested in the Michigan project due to the coaching ability and winning mentality brought in by Dusty May, and with him likely to move on, there could be a change in their thoughts, and it could help a rival program like Kentucky, according to recruiting analysts.

Nikola Kusturica has been one of Dusty May’s top targets, but with the head coach moving on, it remains to be seen if Michigan push to recruit him just as hard as May wanted. Also, whether the program remains as lucrative an option now for the teenager is another issue, and Mark Pope will be waiting to see if he can swing things his way.

Pope has been on a recruiting spree of his own lately, recently recruiting Ryan Hampton after a visit to the Lexington campus, and has his eyes set on the 2027 class’ top recruit in Marcus Spears Jr., too, after missing out on Tyran Stokes earlier this year.

Kentucky Best Placed To Get Nikola Kusturica Deal Over The Line

Kentucky have suddenly emerged as the top team to get Kusturica, even though it didn’t start that way. Gonzaga were initially rumored to be the program most likely to recruit the Serbian, but that changed soon, and Michigan were the frontrunners because of Dusty May’s interest, but with May now gone, Kentucky sit in the driver’s seat.

Kentucky seem to be willing to pay big money to get players over, and with a new AD in J Batt, and a renewed spirit to go all the way in the SEC this season, should Kusturica decide to play American college basketball, the Wildcats might well be his destination.
