Michigan Head Coaching Candidates: Top 5 Replacements For Dusty May After Dallas Mavericks Move

Dusty May has decided to make the jump from college basketball to the professional league. The Dallas Mavericks, moving deeper into the post-Luka Doncic era, have made another franchise-altering decision in adding the Michigan coach. With May headed skyward, Michigan will head the opposite way. That is, unless the team can rebound with a top-tier coach.

Here’s a look at some of the best coaching candidates that make sense for the program.

Top Potential Dusty May Replacements Michigan Can’t Afford to Ignore

    #5 – Jerome Tang (Fired)

According to an ESPN report, Jerome Tang was fired for crossing a line in his contract that prohibits “public disrepute, embarrassment, ridicule.” The last significant report suggests that Tang is available but was last seen “disputing the decision.”

If Michigan can get Tang, the program would give itself a chance of receiving a motivated version of the coach that might be the same as he was in 2022, when his Kansas State Wildcats went 26-10 and made the NCAA Tournament.

    #4 – Mark Schmidt (retired)

Mark Schmidt decided to walk away from the game earlier this year. However, if retirement doesn’t work for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies coach, his resume could give him a solid chance of helping the team weather the upcoming season. Schmidt earned at least 20 wins in two of his last three seasons and has been to the NCAA Tournament before.

    #3 – Thad Matta (retirement)

Thad Matta is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, as the coach has been in the tournament 13 times in his career. The recently retired coach might have a desire to step on the court for one more run if Michigan came calling. The coach is 502-233 in his career and is one of the top options if Michigan can pry him off the couch before he gets too comfortable.

    #2 – Greg McDermott (Retirement)

Michigan will hope to land a coach who has plenty of experience in the tournament, and Greg McDermott offers that. The former Creighton Bluejays coach led the program to the tournament 10 times. He also reached March Madness with Northern Iowa three times before his Creighton tenure, which proves he knows a thing or two about success. Michigan needs a veteran coach who has been there, done that.

    #1 – Hubert Davis (Fired)

Hubert Davis lasted as long at North Carolina as a star basketball player might. After five years and numerous accolades, including a Final Four appearance in 2021, he was let go in late March. Under his tutelage, the team made the NCAA Tournament in four of his five seasons and went 125-54. If Michigan can land the coach, who was fired due to a playoff implosion after a 24-9 season in 2025, the team will have every reason to do backflips.
