Is MSU Out of March Madness? Breaking Down Michigan State’s 2026 NCAA Tournament Chances

With March Madness Selection Day round the corner, the NCAA tournament bracketology is intended on getting a major shuffle on the back of a recent result.

Michigan State, the no. 3 seed of the Big Ten conference suffered a major jolt as they lost to No. 6 UCLA in an enthralling 88-84 quarterfinal encounter last night. This defeat has further propelled UCLA into the semifinals, where they will face the no. 7 seed Purdue Boilermakers to reach the finals and get a chance to lift the all-important Big Ten title.

Meanwhile, MSU, which currently has a 25-7 overall record and a conference record of 15-5, finds itself in an interesting situation as far as the seeding of the all-important NCAA tournament is concerned.

Despite their Big Ten loss to UCLA, projections yield that Michigan State will finish in the two-seed range in March Madness, considering the teams that were vying for a similar finish have lost their respective games, too.

Illinois, which was hovering around the 2-3 seed spot finish after falling to Wisconsin in their Big Ten quarterfinal fixture, will likely be stuck with a lower seed ranking. One of the biggest upsets of the Big Ten campaign also saw Nebraska get steamrolled by Purdue with a scoreline of 74-58 in the quarterfinals, too, a blessing for MSU’s seed rankings.

These results, combined with the margin and difficulty of lost encounters, will only help the Michigan State Spartans’ March Madness rankings. Having lost by just four points in the quarterfinal while losing three of their games to no. 1 seeds, the March Madness bracketology will most likely feature the Spartans in a relatively high seed ranking territory.
