While the Alabama Crimson Tide players are in Chicago for the Sweet 16 matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, Aden Holloway has not traveled with the team. This means Holloway, who is averaging 16.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists, won’t be available for the NCAA Tournament game.
Actually, Holloway is not dealing with an injury. But instead, he has been suspended from the program after authorities arrested him for possessing a large quantity of marijuana, which was allegedly for distribution purposes.
What Happened to Aden Holloway?
Just days before the NCAA Tournament on March 16, Aden Holloway was arrested after police found over 1-2 pounds of marijuana along with cash, paraphernalia and packaging materials in his residence. Given such a large quantity, authorities believe Holloway was distributing the drug.
The Crimson Tide player was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana (not for personal use) and failure to affix a tax stamp (both felony charges).
He was arrested but was later released after posting $5,000 bail. Meanwhile, Holloway’s attorneys have denied all charges and demanded a trial.
In the wake of these allegations, the University of Alabama has taken action of its own. They have suspended Holloway and have removed him from campus.
“The student has been removed from campus pending further investigation by the UA Office of Student Conduct,” Alabama said.
Head coach Nate Oats said the team would move forward without him. However, he still expressed support for Holloway personally despite learning about his wrongdoing.
“We got standards in our program and we’ve got ways we’ve held our guys accountable. And we try to keep everything in-house, obviously some of the situations you can’t, and this is one of those,” Oats said. “We found out about what was going on this morning, I found out this morning. I guess it all went down this morning. And we had to suspend him pending the investigation. …
“We’re certainly disappointed in his behavior. But that being said, we still love him, he’s still our guy. We’re helping him get the help that he needs and we’re going to continue to help him whatever way we can. But as far as our team goes, I thought we had a great practice. We’re preparing to play without him this weekend.”
With the absence of Holloway, Alabama has a big void to fill and that puts them at a disadvantage against Michigan.
