Dan Hurley was around to witness some of the NBA summer league action, and when it came to observing one of his former stars at UConn, he had a lot to say. The head coach of the Huskies praised the development of young Tarris Reed Jr., while admitting the early days might have been a bit of a struggle.
Hurley was on commentary at the summer league, and when asked specifically about Reed’s growth into an NBA player following the draft last month, he made it clear it wasn’t always the easiest battle.
“Getting that guy to play with an identity, a dominance around the basket, becoming a great screener, rim protector, rebounder. Getting him to do things that aren’t very sexy at a championship level, it’s made him a guy who played in the Final Four and became a first-round pick. It was a brutal process, but it was worth it in the end,” Hurley said.
Tarris Reed Jr. Excited to Bring Freshness to the San Antonio Spurs
Tarris Reed Jr.’s effort with Dan Hurley bore fruit as he was a first-round pick in the NBA draft, being selected by the San Antonio Spurs, and he seems excited to bring new energy to the NBA finalists from last season.
“It’s a blessing. What I’m able to bring to an organization… is my everyday effort, my motor… my physicality… on the defensive end, rebounding, set hard screens. So, a great organization that really believes in me… I’m just excited to be part of the family,” Reed told Air Alamo after being picked by the Spurs.
Reed’s college success is an indicator that great things will follow in the NBA too, but only time will tell if the lessons learned under Dan Hurley will translate into silverware at the highest level with San Antonio.
