Following an embarrassing first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, head coach Hubert Davis’ future with UNC appears grim. The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team lost in the first round to the VCU Rams in overtime.
Discussion has been rampant among college basketball circles regarding whether Davis will return to UNC next season. On Saturday’s episode of The Field of 68, analyst Jeff Goodman cited the words of outgoing athletic director Bubba Cunningham:
“Every year at the end of the season, it’s important to evaluate all facets of the program and look for ways to improve,” Cunningham said, per Goodman. “The Chancellor, Steve and I are doing that together now and will continue to have discussions over the coming days.”
Adding to the report, Goodman said he doesn’t think Davis is going to return next season.
“The chances of Hubert Davis being back next year are not very high,” Goodman said.
ESPN Reporter Predicts Future of Hubert Davis With North Carolina
Hubert Davis is a legend in North Carolina and shall be treated like one if there is a reason to part ways, according to ESPN’S Pete Thamel. The ESPN reporter mentioned that the two parties will engage in discussion in the wake of “back-to-back, first-round NCAA tournament exits,” and it is expected that a decision will be made by next week.
Thamel added what could go down between Davis and the Tar Heels.
“Do not expect Davis to be fired outright. Any kind of departure would be synchronized, likely between he and the school. Hubert Davis is a legend at North Carolina and will be treated with that type of respect,” Thamel said.
“The options here are simple: Keep Davis with significant changes to the staff and program or orchestrate some type of wholesale change to the coaching staff and bring in a whole new regime.”
With or without Davis, North Carolina is set to revamp their program from the ground level. Davis is known for helping North Carolina take down fierce rivals Duke twice before they fell to Kansas in the national title game a couple of seasons back. However, since then, Davis has only won two NCAA tournament games, both coming in 2024, when they were the No. 1 seed after winning the ACC regular-season crown.
