“He’s No Ryan Hampton”: Fans React as 5-Star Guard Commits to John Calipari’s Arkansas

Another highly touted perimeter player from high school has committed to John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks. On Wednesday, Link Academy guard Davion Thompson committed to the Razorbacks.

“I felt like it was the best decision and I am ready for the next step in my career,” Thompson told ESPN. “Coach Cal and the coaching staff have been recruiting me hard.”

The news prompted speculation among fans about how Thompson will fare under Calipari’s tutelage. Just this past season, Calipari’s team was led by one-and-done sensation Darius Acuff Jr, who is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA draft. Thompson will have big shoes to fill come the 2027-28 season.

College basketball fans and spectators compared him to past and present recruits in his position.

“He’s no Ryan Hampton,” one fan claimed, mentioning fellow five-star recruit Ryan Hampton.

“Cal’s track record with guards says it all,” another fan pointed out.

“Wherever Cal is, it’s PGU🤣💯💯,” another user said with emojis.

“Remember Hogs, he wanted Vandy first,” a user shared.

Other users are hyped for Thompson’s commitment to Arkansas.

“Excited you are a Razorback, Davion‼️🐗,” one fan exclaimed.

    “Bolingbrook represent!!,” another fan posted.

“Elite scorer and shooter,” a fan wrote.

Thompson is currently ranked as the 27th overall five-star recruit among all prospects in the class of 2027. The Bolingbrook, Illinois native will play his final year of high school hoops next season before joining Calipari and company. The Razorbacks are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2026 national tournament.

Thompson’s commitment coincides with other standouts in his class such as DME Academy forward Ryan Hampton. The latter recently committed to the Kentucky Wildcats, which are coached by Mark Pope. The Wildcats were coach Calipari’s former team, whom he won the 2012 NCAA title with. Hampton is currently ranked as sixth in the class of 2027.

John Calipari’s ability to produce NBA-ready guards persuaded Davion Thompson

Time and time again, John Calipari has produced some of the best guards in the NBA. From his coaching years with the Kentucky Wildcats, he developed the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray and De’Aaron Fox.

Thompson explained what convinced him to join Arkansas.

“Just the culture they have and the reputation that coach Cal has. He has a lot of guards that come through, and he puts them in the NBA and in the best position to chase their dreams. It’s pretty much the coaching staff, too. They’ve been on me since I was a sophomore or junior, so I have a good relationship with them. I like the visit when I went up there. Everything was good,” Thompson was quoted as saying.
