What Happened in Fran McCaffery’s Son’s Accident? All We Know About Fatal Crash That Killed 45-Year-Old Person

Pennsylvania has upset No. 1 Yale to earn a spot in this year’s NCAA Tournament, and one of the people behind it is the Quakers’ head coach, Fran McCaffery. He has led the Quakers from an unknown Division I team to being the new Ivy League champions. However, as he and his team celebrate, many also know him for another incident.

While he was still the head coach of Iowa, Fran’s teenage son was caught up in an accident that resulted in the death of a man from Cedar Rapids. The incident happened on May 22, 2023, when Jonathan “Jack” McCaffery, who was a junior at Iowa City West High School at that time, hit 45-year-old Corey J. Hite with his car.

Hite would later succumb to his injuries. The victim was passing through a crosswalk, yet the younger McCaffery continued to drive, eventually hitting him. This soon led to a court case where Jack was found guilty of failure to yield, with the court finding that he was driving “at or near the speed limit,” which is 35 miles per hour along Melrose Avenue at the time.

The judge also ruled that Jack’s field of view was obstructed, as a mail truck had been blocking his view before the incident occurred. The younger McCaffery was in the left lane while the truck was in the right, and this was when he hit Hite, leading to his death.

Fran McCaffery’s Son is Now a Freshman Basketball Player at Butler

While he grew up in Iowa and his father, Fran McCaffery, is the coach at Pennsylvania, Jack McCaffery is now a freshman at Butler University. He also plays basketball there for the Bulldogs, who were eliminated by Providence in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

As a freshman forward, Jack McCaffery is not expected to play many minutes, but he does average 2.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game for the Bulldogs. His best game came in November when they defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks. He got a three-point play after getting fouled due to an offensive rebound.
