“Good Riddance”: Fans React As Darryn Peterson Makes NBA Draft Decision After Injury-Filled Rookie Season

Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson declared for the 2026 NBA draft after battling with injuries for most of the season. Peterson missed 11 games and played limited minutes in many others.

On Friday, Peterson took to X to bid farewell to the Jayhawks for believing in him and for being there every step of the way. He also mentioned family, coaching staff and teammates for contributing to his overall development.

“To my teammates, friends, and everyone at the University of Kansas, a heartfelt thank you! Your belief in me, your encouragement, and your constant support have been invaluable every step of the way,” Peterson wrote. “This journey has been everything to me, and none of it would have been possible without your love, support, and sacrifices.

To my family, you have always been my foundation. To my teammates, you are my brothers for life. To the coaches and staff at Kansas, I am grateful for your trust and for helping me grow both on and off the court. And to my fellow Jayhawks, thank you for embracing me and making this experience truly unforgettable.

Finally, he revealed that he thought a lot before deciding to enter the NBA draft, while adding that he will remain grateful to the program.

Peterson’s farewell message was met with backlash from fans, as they pointed out how the guard missed nearly half of the season.

“Good riddance, you drama-seeking bum,” one fan wrote.

“lol you really needed this after load managing in college?” another fan asked.

“bust potential of Markelle Fultz with the health of Joel Embiid. Carry the hell on,” one fan commented.

“Bro gonna fall to 5 😭” one fan added.

“You gonna sit out half the season in the NBA too?” one fan asked.

Darryn Peterson Raised Concerns After Injury Marred CBB Season

Early in the season, Darryn Peterson missed seven straight games with a hamstring strain. Upon returning, the Jayhawks guard dealt with persistent cramping and missed additional games. He also suffered an ankle injury and quad discomfort because of which he left the games early and played limited minutes when active.

Peterson also dealt with flu-like symptoms. In one game, he participated in the warm-ups but didn’t take the floor. As a result, his durability, pain tolerance and consistency all came into question since he was projected as a lottery pick.

Despite all of that, Peterson didn’t fail to put everyone on notice by averaging more than 20 points per game on efficient 49 percent shooting, including over 40 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

There was a timeframe when Peterson was viewed unanimous first overall pick but now he’s receiving competition from AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer for the honor.
