Dusty May started his coaching career in 2005. After numerous assistant coaching jobs in college basketball, he became the Michigan head coach in 2024. In the two years he has coached so far, he has an impressive record of 64-13 and on top of that a national championship.
He brought back glory to the Wolverines after 37 years. He led an inspired group who were considered underrated all season. Dusty May’s Michigan had a 19-1 Big Ten and 37-3 overall record. They were also crowned Big Ten regular-season champions.
May signed an impressive deal with the Wolverines in 2024. He also had an extension on the table in February 2025 but he hasn’t signed it yet. It was supposed to be signed after this season but that hasn’t happened yet. During the delay, there have been speculations about May’s future. There are reports that suggest NBA teams are interested in the Michigan HC.
Dusty May has drawn interest from NBA teams like the Orlando Magic and even the Warriors. With Steve Kerr’s future doubtful, the Warriors also might chase Dusty May. However, interest from the Orlando Magic is more evident.
Reportedly, May is a top candidate for the Magic. May had been tied to the Magic job even before it opened, and there was mutual interest between the two parties.
Orlando fired Jamahl Mosley after the team blew a 3-1 lead vs Detroit Pistons in the NBA playoffs. This was the third time in a row that the Magic had suffered disappointment in the first round of the playoffs. Now they are in search of their next coach, and Dusty May might be their man.
Dusty May’s comments about future in the NBA and contract with Michigan
Dusty May recently made it clear that he and Michigan have a verbal confirmation in place. There are only a few official formalities that are left and he will very soon sign the new contract extension.
As for the NBA rumors, May said, “I mean obviously we all think about that as younger coaches, but no, it’s not something…our full attention has been on building this roster and plans of hopefully competing for a championship again next year.”
