The UConn Huskies faced a surprising 91-84 loss to Creighton on Wednesday. The Huskies are 24-3 in the season and fell to the Blue Jays for the second year in a row. To date, UConn has never pulled off a regular-season sweep over Creighton. On top of that, Dan Hurley was already in a row for slamming his home fans a few days ahead of the game.
Josh Dix and Nik Graves led the scoring for Creighton with 19 and 18 points, respectively. The Blue Jays’ head coach, Greg McDermott, called this the ‘perfect’ game for his offense. However, Hurley didn’t hesitate to acknowledge UConn’s shortcomings.
“It was a game of just really bad individual defense,” Hurley said. “Creighton just went at us from a one-on-one standpoint.”
It seems like Hurley also had an issue with the officiating crew. College basketball insider Scott Hughes reported Hurley saying:
“‘I told that officiating crew to save me a spot in Hell.’”
Besides, Dan Hurley regrets playing Alex Karaban in this matchup. Karaban scored only two points and appeared to be suffering from a lingering injury.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have played Alex today,” Hurley said during Wednesday’s post-game press conference. “He said he was fine, but he’s dealing with something physically. He was not moving around well there on the court. He was a shell of himself.”
Dan Hurley’s UConn seems to be in the middle of chaos right ahead of Selection Sunday. Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see Hurley identifying and acknowledging his team’s shortcomings. It would be interesting to see if UConn can fix its problems ahead of the postseason.
Dan Hurley Feels Like an ‘Idiot’ for Blasting Home Crowd
Dan Hurley is passionate when it comes to basketball. And why not? He is coaching one of the most successful college basketball programs in recent years and believes that the home crowd has played a huge role in building the hype and prestige around the team. UConn has been the place to be for some great hoops environment. However, Dan Hurley called out his home crowd after the recent win against Georgetown, asking them to create more hype and turn the home arena into a “madhouse.”
But after the game against Creighton, Hurley walked back on his comments. In his postgame presser, he said:
“Crowd was awesome. I feel like a little bit of an idiot. Where you criticize your home environment. They were awesome today. We have a little bit of a tendency this year to kill the crowd.”
After the win against Georgetown, Hurley recalled how, while shaking hands with Ed Cooley, he was asked about the empty seats at UConn. This explains why he wanted the home ground to be a ‘madhouse,’ which the UConn fans quickly took note of. Although the Huskies lost, the fans didn’t disappoint in showing up.
