The Cincinnati Bearcats have parted ways with head coach Wes Miller after a 66-65 defeat to UCF in the Big 12 Tournament. This crushed all hopes of the Bearcats making a run at the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and immediately put Miller’s future in doubt. As per multiple reports, the separation will be made official on April 1, when Miller’s buyout drops from $9.9 million to $4.7 million.
Amongst the candidates to replace Miller is UConn Huskies assistant coach Luke Murray. Murray’s name has popped up in a number of head-coaching searches, including Syracuse and Providence.
However, for UConn head coach Dan Hurley, this could hardly be an issue. In fact, he looks forward to his assistants getting head coaching roles in top programs.
“Look what they’ve helped us do here,” he said. “I want those guys to get jobs. But I also want those guys to get jobs where they have a chance to win. They’re compensated well enough here, and they love working together, so it doesn’t make them fidgety or panicky to get out of here.”
Murray has been one of the masterminds behind UConn’s offense and has assistant coaching experience from Wagner, Townson, Rhode Island, Xavier, and Louisville. One of Hurley’s most trusted staff members, Murray was the head man leading the coaching staff after Hurley at Wagner and Rhode Island. His coaching style can be described as deploying a creative offense, in which he emphasizes off-ball screens and cuts. This was one of the major factors that gave UConn a run at winning consecutive championships in 2023 and 2024.
But Dan Hurley isn’t afraid of losing his best men to better opportunities. As per CT Insider, Hurley said, “I’m not afraid to lose people. I don’t hire ‘yes’ men, I hire talented people.”
How Was Wes Miller’s Tenure At Cincinnati?
Wes Miller’s tenure at Cincinnati held hope and promise throughout the five seasons. It was marked with initial enthusiasm when the young coach was hired in 2021, after earning accolades such as ESPN’s No. 1 Coach Under 40 and a spot on Athletic’s 40 Under 40 list. Over his five seasons, Miller compiled a 100-74 overall record, including 41-51 in Big 12 play.
However, despite such flashes of brilliance and some memorable wins, Miller never managed to guide the Bearcats to an NCAA Tournament berth. For context, this was once a school that dominated under Bob Huggins and had the all-time great Oscar Robertson among its alumni. With Miller’s departure, this marks Cincinnati’s 29th head coaching search. If Luke Murray is selected, will he be able to replicate his success at UConn in transforming the Bearcats?
