Eric Musselman’s USC announced its decision to cut ties with Chad Baker-Mazara on Sunday. The school posted a press release about its decision to end the former Auburn transfer’s time with the Trojans.
Baker-Mazara appeared in 26 games for the Trojans and led the team in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per game. The senior transfer from Auburn joined the Trojans after two seasons with Bruce Pearl.
Baker-Mazara last took the court for USC just a day before his suspension when Eric Musselman’s squad took on Nebraska in a Big 10 showdown. While the Trojans couldn’t overcome the Cornhuskers’ 82 points, Baker-Mazara put up a fight, tallying 14 points, combined with a rebound, assist, steal, and a block each.
Why is Chad Baker-Mazara not with USC anymore?
While the loss likely had nothing to do with it, Baker-Mazara exited the game early vs Nebraska after taking a hard hit while trying to block Pryce Sandfort in transition.
What looked like a serious injury concern with the 6-foot-7 star walking straight to the locker room turned out to be a tantrum when he returned courtside, but he went on to sit amongst spectators instead of the team bench. Baker-Mazara ignored coach Eric Musselman’s attempt to get him back on the team bench.
While Eric Musselman did not comment on the incident in his post-game interview, the school made the decision to move on from Baker-Mazara.
Chad Baker-Mazara is no longer a member of the USC Men’s Basketball program, the school announced Sunday.
USC’s March Madness Hopes Hang In The Balance As Season Closes
With a loss to Nebraska, USC currently sits in the next four out alongside Virginia Tech, Seton Hall, and Cincinnati, according to bracketology expert Joe Lunardi. With a lowly 7-11 conference record, the Trojans currently sit at 11th in the Big Ten standings.
As things currently stand, USC will have to win its next two regular-season games and hope for a miracle against Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, and Michigan State, and more in the Big Ten championship. With its top scorer now not a part of the team anymore, and Alijah Arenas still settling in after an ACL injury, a Big Ten championship will be the last resort for the Trojans in an otherwise gloomy season.
