Cameron Boozer had a successful freshman year with Duke. After leading the Blue Devils to an Elite Eight finish, Boozer declared for the NBA draft, as was expected from one of the best players of the season.
However, it wasn’t just Boozer who left a mark on that Duke squad. Isaiah Evans, Patrick Ngongba, Cayden Boozer, Caleb Foster, Dame Sarr, Nikolas Khamenia, and Maliq Brown were all highly rated recruits.
Khamenia jumped ship in the transfer portal, committing to the UConn Huskies, the team that beat the Blue Devils in the Elite Eight this past season. The Duke transfer is set to play his sophomore year under UConn coach Dan Hurley. He made the announcement on social media on Saturday.
The transfer was received by the Duke team and its supporters with some obvious sadness. Cameron Boozer’s girlfriend, Yva Lauren Cao, made her feelings clear.
She commented:
“Miss nikolandria already.”
Cao also addressed Khamenia’s girlfriend, writing:
“So now I have to go to Connecticut to see @madisyngrant_.”
Reviewing Nikolas Khamenia’s transfer to Dan Hurley’s UConn
Nikolas Khamenia averaged 5.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 38 games. He played his part as a role player under Jon Scheyer. But his transfer to Dan Hurley’s team suggests that he is trying to find a starting spot for next season.
For Dan Hurley and UConn, Alex Karaban, Tarris Reed Jr., Malachi Smith, Dwayne Koroma, and Alec Millender have exhausted their college basketball eligibility. Jaylin Stewart, Eric Reibe, Uros Paunovic, and Ahmad Nowell entered the transfer portal. With a rebuild in mind for Hurley, Khamenia might just be the man.
Khamenia would be motivated to prove himself, and Hurley would get a willing player with experience playing for an elite program like Duke. On paper, it seems like a win-win situation.
