Caleb Wilson has been putting up good numbers consistently for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He is averaging nearly 20 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting over 57% from the field in 24 games.
The Tar Heels are about to face the Pittsburgh Panthers today. NC is currently seventh in the Atlantic Coast and is coming off a loss against the Miami Hurricanes. The Panthers, on the other hand, have won just nine games.
It’s a must-win game for the Tar Heels as they’d like to not extend their losing streak, but it’s not going to be easy. Wilson, a very reliable forward for the team, will not be available for the game against the Panthers.
During the Miami game, Wilson suffered a fractured left hand and is currently out. What makes this situation worse for NC is that there’s no return timeline for the forward. As of now, the only thing that’s guaranteed is that Wilson will not lace up for the Tar Heels.
“X-rays taken during the [Miami] game were negative, and he returned to play later in the second half vs. the Hurricanes, but additional imaging done in Chapel Hill revealed the fracture,” NC said in the announcement.
The school also stated in the official announcement that, on further evaluation, a clearer picture of Wilson’s return timeline can be drawn. With no possibility of return anytime soon, NC will go against Pittsburgh without their star player, who’s averaging nearly 20 points per game.
Wilson’s absence will be felt on the floor today, but the Tar Heels have enough talent on their roster to register a win against Pittsburgh on their home court.
Caleb Wilson is Still Hopeful for His Season
Coming back from a fractured hand isn’t going to be easy for Wilson. He’ll undergo several treatments and assessments before he’s declared fit to step onto the floor again. Many believe that his season is in danger.
However, the forward is still very hopeful.
“That is why it was super important to make sure you didn’t take a player like Caleb Wilson for granted. It can be over just like that,” a former sports news anchor posted on X.
In response, Wilson wrote an encouraging three-word message, “It’s not over.” The 19-year-old, who is projected to be a top-five draft pick, believes that he can bounce back in time to join the Tar Heels.
