Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self remains undecided on his future, as he is looking forward to taking time off during the upcoming offseason to reflect on his life on and off the court. On Sunday, March 22, Self and his Jayhawks team lost 65-67 to coach Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm in the second round of the 2026 NCAA tournament on neutral grounds, Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.
During his post-game press conference, in a video uploaded by @TheFieldOf68 on X/Twitter, Self was asked to comment on his future, now that the Jayhawks are no longer in contention for the national championship. For Self, he is aware of everything he has gone through in his coaching career, both on the court and off it. He said he will continue coaching only if he feels good.
“ Well, I haven’t really gone through much on the court. You know, I’ve gone through some stuff off the court. So I’ll get back and get with family and visit, and see what’s going on. I love what I do, you know. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it, you know, fairly well. So, I’ll get back home, and it’ll all be discussed,” Self shared (0:09).
Self and his Kansas-based program lost to the Red Storm through a disheartening game-winning layup by St. John’s guard Dylan Darling. The Jayhawks were hoping to win another national title this decade, after they last won it in 2022. But they will now have to try again next year, with or without Self.
Bill Self Says His Health Is Also A Factor In Deciding Whether He Returns To Coach The Kansas Jayhawks
In the same video, Self expounded further on the factors that will help him decide on his future.
The tenured tactician mentioned that his health is a significant factor. This is because Self has dealt with health matters throughout the 2025-26 season.
“You know, I haven’t decided. I’ll get back and visit with family, and, you know, I’ve got, I’ve had some, obviously, issues off the court, health-wise, and that’ll be discussed. But I love what I do. I want to feel good while I’m doing it, though. So, we’ll get back, and we’ll discuss that when we get back,” Self said (0:34).
