BYU Cougars superstar AJ Dybantsa admitted that he actually did not know much about his program’s rivalry with their latest opponents. On Saturday, Jan. 24, Dybantsa and the rest of coach Kevin Young‘s Cougars went up against coach Alex Jensen’s Utah Utes on the latter’s home floor, the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.
During the post-game press conference, Dybantsa was asked for his thoughts on the long-term rivalry between BYU and the Utes. The 18-year-old, who faced Utah for the first time in front of a hostile away crowd, admitted that he did not know much about the rivalry between the two programs.
“ See me like, I ain’t know too much about the rivalry, like I’m from Boston, but people were just dragging it the whole time. Talking about Utah this, Utah that. So I was like I guess I’ll go off for y’all,” Dybantsa shared.
Dybantsa popped off against the Utes, scoring a game-high 43 points on an efficient 15-of-24 from the field, along with six rebounds, three assists, and a block in 36 minutes of playing time. This led to the Cougars‘ scratching another victory against their rivals in their long-tenured history, as they won by 13 points, 91-78. BYU improved to an overall record of 17-2 (5-1 Big 12).
AJ Dybantsa Discussed What It Feels Like To Be A Part Of Three Other Freshmen To Score 40 Points In One Day
Along with AJ Dybantsa, fellow freshmen Kingston Flemings and Keaton Waggler also dropped at least 40 points on the same day. Dybantsa was asked about his reaction to this in correlation to the college rookie class he is in, along with how it feels to be a part of it all. For Dybantsa, the greatness of the freshman class of 2026 stems from the grassroots.
“ Yeah, these freshmen going crazy. I feel like we have a crazy class. I think we have one of the best classes in recent years,” Dybantsa said. “I mean, it feels good. I’ve been playing against these guys since I was 15, starting at EYBL and different camps, Nike academies and Curry camps and stuff like that. So I’ve done seeing these guys grow and it’s just amazing to be a part of it.”
