AJ Dybantsa is on a trajectory only a few athletes get to experience in sports every year. The potential No. 1 pick has all eyes on him, which can make his career. It also could break his career, depending on how he responds to the early taste of success. Up to this point, Dybantsa had been working under the guise of what could be. In late June, that will transition to what is.
AJ’s father, Anicet Dybantsa Sr., spoke about the work that the star prospect has taken on without any promise of reward, including living under a strict roof. In a Sunday reel on X from allthesmoke, he spoke about what it was like from his perspective and what he told the star.
“He had to sacrifice a lot,” he said. “No birthdays, no girlfriends. Just work. I’m like, ‘Hey, you chose to do this. You gotta pay the price.’ He paid the price, and now he’s about to be rewarded. … He’s not my friend. He’s my son. I told him, ‘I don’t need your a**.’ He needs me more than I need him.”
I told him, ‘You can cut me tomorrow. I’m gonna be fine. I’ve been working for 37 years. I’m gonna be fine.’ He understands. I tell him what he doesn’t want to hear. I told him you don’t want to have yes-men around you. People want to kiss your a**, and they’re going to bring nothing to the table. I will help. Always.”
It seems AJ Dybantsa has been warned all his life about the pitfalls, and to this point, he appears to have followed his father’s rules. However, when Dybantsa gets his first NBA paycheck, he will see some of the greatest tests of his life to that point.
Which Teams Could Draft AJ Dybantsa
At this point, AJ Dybantsa appears to be in line for the No. 1 overall pick. However, with the draft lottery over, the Washington Wizards are at the front of the line with the top pick. If the Wizards want the rookie, the other teams will be powerless to stop the team.
If the Wizards go in a different direction to chase many of the other top names, it would open the door for the Utah Jazz. If the Jazz go with a different rookie, the Memphis Grizzlies will have every reason to celebrate the team’s good fortune and snag the rookie. Falling out of the top three picks would be a stunning turn of events in the minds of most.
Either way, whether picked first or third, Dybantsa won’t be waiting long to learn where he will begin his NBA career.
