After Elliot Cadeau’s Transfer Portal Decision, Dusty May’s Michigan Set to Receive Another Boost As NCAA Final’s Star Set to Return

After helping Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines win the national championship, Elliot Cadeau has decided to stay with the program rather than enter the transfer portal. The Wolverines received another boost on Friday when power forward Morez Johnson said he was open to returning.

Johnson may have entered the NBA draft, but he says he’ll be happy to return to May’s program if he doesn’t get a guaranteed contract.

“There’s no rush because if I can’t get a (guarantee NBA contract this year), I know I can get it next year. I have no issue with coming back to Michigan and trying to repeat,” Johnson said.

In order to get a guaranteed NBA contract, Johnson will need to get picked in the first round of the draft. He is viewed as a borderline first-to-second-round prospect. Some mock drafts have him between No. 20 and No. 24, and in some others, he goes as late as No. 43.

So there’s a good chance Johnson doesn’t go to the NBA and instead spends one more year in college, hoping to help Michigan defend the title.

After transferring from Illinois, Morez Johnson became a national champion with Michigan, averaging 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in the 2025-26 season. He also starred in the national championship against UConn, scoring 12 points and securing 10 rebounds.

With the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Elliot Cadeau, also returning, May is securing key players for next season.

Dusty May Secures Michigan’s First Transfer Portal Commit

Dusty May filled his squad with transfer portal players last season and they delivered him a national championship. Now May is looking to run things back by not only retaining those players but also securing important commitments for next season.

Within three days of the transfer portal opening, May’s team has been boosted by JP Estrella’s commitment. With two years of eligibility remaining, the redshirt junior will play for Michigan this fall.

247Sports’ Isaac Trotter gave this commitment an “A” grade and he explained the reason:

“Estrella is one of the most skilled bigs in this transfer portal class. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound big man is a load on the offensive glass, possesses a feathery touch to finish over shot-blockers and can make quick reads as a playmaker. All of those traits are essential in Michigan’s scheme… Even if one of Johnson or Mara decides to cash in and return to Ann Arbor for a second year, Estrella’s mobility and skill should fit snugly next to either of the big fellas. Grade: A”

Estrella averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He shot 59.6 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent from three, this past season with the Tennessee Vols.
