Boston College men’s basketball fans were hoping for change. Unfortunately, this year, they will be getting more of the same. Earl Grant has been the head coach of the BC basketball team since 2021. His first season ended with a rather disappointing 13-20 record at the Atlantic Coast Conference.
This was followed by improvement to 16-17 in 2022-23. However, not all of it is dismal.

After the Fall From Grace, Fans Disappointed in Earl Grant’s Retention Decision
The 2023-24 season was the Eagles’ highest win total in over a decade. Grant carried the team to a 20-16, and they went on to finish 11th in the ACC. But just one season later, everything fell apart. The 2024-25 season was a season that is best left forgotten for BC.
“Boston College AD Blake James tells me that Earl Grant will return as head coach next season,” CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein took to X to confirm.
And that simple statement was the beginning of an avalanche of frustration from BC supporters.
And the frustration might just be justified! During the 2024-25 season, the Eagles fell to a 12-17 overall record and a sad 4-14 mark in conference play. They went on to finish 16th in the 18-team ACC.
This meant that the Earl Grant-coached team completely missed out on the ACC tournament in Charlotte.
So it comes as no surprise that one fan went on to write, “Absolutely embarrassing. The students, the alumni, the entire fanbase all deserve better than this.”
Interestingly, this was not a sole voice of disapproval.
Backing the fan up, another disappointed fan wrote, “Mediocrity is acceptable at BC.” However, it seems like none were more disappointed than the alumni of BC.
“This is a shame, and I have no ability to care about this team anymore. You’ve killed one of the best parts about being a BC alumni,” wrote one disheartened supporter.
It looks like the general consensus is that the program isn’t going anywhere as long as Earl Grant is at the helm. But why exactly is the frustration so intense?
Well, it is not just about the record but about how the team fell from grace last off-season. BC’s roster has the worst crumble of them all, as Grant failed to bring in enough talent from the transfer portal to stay competitive.
Additionally, with their star player Quinten Post off to the NBA and no clear replacements, the Eagles could not hold up in the big games.

The few promising names, like Donald Hand Jr. and Chad Venning, weren’t enough to salvage the season. With Venning graduating soon, the BC roster is going to have a hard time winning.
And, of course, as the fandom sees it, “Missing the ACC tournament is an absolute embarrassment! That is a very very low bar to hit and Earl missed it!”
BC’s offense last season had extended scoring droughts, questionable shot selection, and frequent turnovers. The defense, once a point of pride, was inconsistent at best.
Unfortunately, when the crush time came around, the Eagles routinely fell apart due to poor clock management and an inability to execute under pressure. For many fans, keeping Earl Grant feels like settling.
At the end of the day, Boston College fans aren’t asking for miracles. They just want a team that can compete and a coach who can build a sustainable program. Right now, they don’t have that. And with Earl Grant returning, many are wondering if they ever will.
