Former Auburn basketball head coach Bruce Pearl noticed an interesting detail at the 2026 NBA draft.
The NBA draft is always filled with a lot of excitement. There are emotional embraces, life-changing phone calls and dreams becoming reality. Many of the lottery picks often bring their close ones to the draft. They could be parents, siblings, coaches, mentors, and friends.
On Tuesday, Pearl observed that several players at the draft were interviewed with their parents. He finds it heartwarming.
“Anybody noticing how many of these young players at the NBA DRAFT are being interviewed and sitting down with BOTH mom and DAD? It makes a huge difference. Family First!” the current TNT/CBS Sports analyst wrote on X.
This observation is not new. For years, top NBA draft picks have always spoken highly about the role of their parents in their development. The NBA draft is the place where parents can be proud for supporting their children all these years.
Last year in September, Bruce Pearl retired as the head men’s basketball coach at Auburn University. The 65-year-old finished his tenure at Auburn as the winningest coach in the history of the program. His son, Steven Pearl, who was the associate head coach of the program, succeeded him with a new five-year contract as head coach.
Pearl led Auburn to two Final Four appearances, including securing the No. 1 seed in 2025. He also won three SEC regular season titles.
Bruce Pearl’s NBA Draft Prediction Stood Correct Regarding Michigan
Under head coach Dusty May, Michigan won the national championship game against the UConn Huskies. Several players from Ann Arbor declared for the NBA draft with many even threatening top 12 selections.
Ahead of the draft, Bruce Pearl predicted that the trio of Morez Johnson Jr., Aday Mara and Yaxel Lendeborg would be picked earlier than many anticipate, potentially inside top 12.
“Those Michigan bigs,” Pearl said.
Morez Johnson Jr. was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks. The Golden State Warriors picked Yaxel Lendeborg with their 12th overall pick. The Oklahoma City Thunder utilized their 12th overall pick to draft 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara.
It seems Pearl was right with his prediction as NBA teams were bullish on this dominating Michigan trio.
