Matt Rhule is under pressure after the Nebraska Cornhuskers lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Cornhuskers are on a decent run of 7-5. However, the Hawkeyes have improved their record with the win and are now 8-4. Two objectively equal teams met on Friday, Nov. 28, and the Hawkeyes beat head coach Rhule’s team 40-16.
The first quarter of the game was pretty evenly matched. Nebraska and Iowa were tied at 10-10. But the game got away from the Cornhuskers over the next three quarters. The Hawkeyes led the three remaining quarters 14-6, 9-0, and 7-0, respectively.
The internet was filled with memes about Matt Rhule after a rather embarrassing loss.
“The Nebraska athletic department trying to take back Matt Rhule’s contract extension,” one fan said.
“Wait for year three Matt Rhule,” another fan commented.
“You know what day it is. F*CK NEBRASKA F*CK MATT RHULE. Iowa is your daddy,” another fan replied.
“Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule when he was at Temple took a team from 2-10 to 10-3 in year 3! There was no transfer portal, hosted college Gameday, beat Penn state, and was a few plays away from beating Notre Dame,” another said.
“Kirk Ferentz to Matt Rhule,” one fan joked about the two coaches.
“Matt Rhule since Nebraska gave him a contract extension,” another fan mocked the Nebraska coach.
“Get in the f*cking locker, Matt Rhule,” another replied.
Matt Rhule’s Contract Extension
The Cornhuskers committed their future to Matt Rhule after substantial investment in their sports program. According to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Nebraska added $25 million in base salary to his original contract, as he signed a two-year extension.
This new deal is valid till 2032. Nebraska has placed long-term faith in his leadership despite the rocky finish to the regular season.
