The Indiana Hoosiers are having a massive season, and a big reason has been the fanbase, according to billionaire Mark Cuban. The Hoosiers have entered the College Football Playoff Championship game after beating the Oregon Ducks in the Peach Bowl. They’ll face Miami in the NCAA title game.
The Hoosiers were unbeaten in the regular season and won the Big Ten championship, defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Hoosiers then defeated Alabama in the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal game.
On Saturday, a fan asked Cuban, who is worth $6 billion (via Celebrity Net Worth):
“Mark Cuban, can you please share what % of the total giving for football you’re responsible for? There’s a narrative that you’re funding almost the entire thing and teams can’t win without a billionaire donor nowadays.”
Cuban deflected the question while highlighting that the Hoosiers’ fanbase is the biggest donor of the program, as evident in the support turnout in both of their playoff games so far.
“I don’t know,” Cuban wrote on X. “What I’m pretty sure of is that Hoosier Nation has delivered. Thousands of IU fans donating what they can to help the cause, is far more than what I give. It takes not just the best Coach,AD , Players and Organization to win, it takes a fan base that loves IU as much as I do. The 2 playoff games have been home games. That tells you what you need to know about Hoosier Nation and how far they are willing to go to help.”
Mark Cuban Super Impressed with Indiana HC Curt Cignetti
After Indiana thrashed Oregon 56-22, Mark Cuban shared massive praise for head coach Curt Cignetti. The Indiana University alum praised Cignetti’s team-building philosophy. Rather than chasing high-end recruits, Cignetti has focused on developing talent.
“I think I’ve been a part of championship organizations, and putting together a team isn’t easy,” Cuban said. “And putting together, and having, a strategy and a plan that respects the athletes, respects everybody in the organization, and the coaches. And really, I think in this era of football, you didn’t see IU—like when they came to me, it wasn’t about, ‘Okay, there’s this guy and he’s the highest-rated, and this is what he’s getting; we’re going to outbid them all.’
“It wasn’t like that at all. And Coach said it best: we want performance, not futures, right? Yeah, potential. And so that’s what makes them different.”
Cuban expressed excitement for Indiana’s championship game against Miami. It remains to be seen if one of Indiana’s biggest donor will finally see the Big Ten giants take down their ACC rivals.
