Amidst QB Brendan Sorsby’s gambling investigation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), there has been a lot of chatter surrounding his CFB eligibility and the overall ramifications it will have on his collegiate career with Texas Tech.
In a recent update from CFB writer Ross Dellenger, it looks like the Red Raiders’ signal caller has retained attorney Jeffrey Kessler in order to win back his eligibility from the NCAA while also hoping to reach a compromise with the association. However, if the compromise doesn’t actualize, Sorsby will go down the legal route, independent from his current CFB program.
Commenting on the entire situation, CFB analyst Josh Pate has laid down three possible options that Sorsby might have to go through during legal pursuit for his NCAA eligibility in connection to this entire gambling saga.
Keeping the supplemental NFL draft date in mind, which is the 30th of June, Pate suggested Sorsby get an injunction with the hope of somehow playing in the upcoming CFB season. Pate also believes that a resolution with the NCAA could help the Texas Tech quarterback get back his eligibility and play for the Texas-based program.
“His choices here rather, are get an injunction and somehow he’s able to play, that’s A”, Pate stated on his show (9:57)
“B, he reaches a resolution with the NCAA or a compromise in Ross’ (Dellenger) words with the NCAA and he’s able to play. Both of those will get him on the field”, Pate suggested (10:03)
However, if the first two options don’t work out and the legal proceedings go past the 30th of June, Pate believes Brendan would have no choice but to be deemed ineligible for the season and not feature on field, which would mean directly going for the NFL draft next year.
“Option three, he holds out in the fight past June 30th, but then he’s still ruled ineligible and he’s just out for the year and then he goes and enters the NFL draft. That’s option three” Pate further elaborated (10:12).
This legal turmoil comes on the backdrop of Sorsby allegedly placing multiple bets online while also reportedly betting on his own games with the Indiana Hoosiers back in 2022, which is in breach of the NCAA rules.
Is Brendan Sorsby Eligible For The NFL Supplemental Draft?
The NFL Supplemental Draft is a summer window that allows college players to essentially try and sign up for one of the franchises in the league if their eligibility status changes.
Not only is this window quite relevant for Sorsby given his run-in with the NCAA over his CFB eligibility, but the supplemental draft could also provide franchises who missed out on some QB prospects earlier this month to bolster their side.
While Sorsby is still vying to play college football for one more season, if he continues to remain ineligible, the Supplemental Draft could very well be his pathway to the NFL, provided he declares before the 30th June deadline.
