Longhorns Steve Sarkisian Boosts Jonah Williams’ 2-Sport Stardom With His Insight

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are busy preparing for the upcoming college football season. However, very few people have a busier sports schedule than Texas dual-threat player, Jonah Williams. Williams is a dual-sport star for Texas, playing on both the football and baseball team.

Williams joined the Longhorns as a part of the Texas 2025 recruiting class. According to ESPN, the safety is the No. 9-ranked player in his class and a five-star recruit. The Texas baseball team posted a video of him on base during a game on Saturday with the simple but impactful caption, “Swagger.”

Texas Has a Two-Sport Monster, and Steve Sarkisian Just Put the Nation Behind Him

Steve Sarkisian, the Texas Longhorns head coach, has very high hopes for Williams. He even went as far as to boost Williams’ two-sport potential on Instagram, drawing attention to Texas’s next big athletic star. The message came after Florida defeated Texas, 8-2, in college baseball.

“Be at your best when your best is needed!” head coach Steve Sarkisian posts to his Instagram story.

This post comes after Williams was heavily criticized for his behavior during the game. During an at-bat, while his team trailed the Gators by seven runs, Williams was trash-talking the opposing pitcher heavily and earned a walk in the same at bat.

After the walk, the chirping continued as Williams exchanged heated words with the Gators pitcher. This ultimately resulted in the first base coach, Michael Cantu, needing to intervene to tell both sides to play the game and shift their focus from the fight.

The Texas Longhorns baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle speaks about the incident with Williams and talked about even though he likes Williams a lot, Williams must understand the unwritten rules of the game.

“Jonah’s awesome, man. His energy and his competitiveness and his will to win is if I’m a Texas fan, which I am, I would want that,” Schlossnagle said. “He’s just got to understand that baseball’s a little different, and there’s unwritten rules in the way you play the game.”

“He knows that. He’s just trying to win, he’s not doing anything to show anybody up. He really wants to win that bad. When I say win, it’s not just the game, it’s the pitch, it’s the at-bat, it’s the play.”

Trash-talking has become somewhat of a norm in sports. Despite Williams having the minor incident in the game today, Williams still possesses a very high ceiling with a ton of potential. He still gets a lot of support from Sarkisian, and it should be interesting to see how Williams continues to navigate through being a two-sport athlete.
