Jon Sumrall Responds After Wife Exposes his Love for Pedicures

Newly hired Florida coach Jon Sumrall’s wife, Ginny, recently shed light on his personal habits in an interview with WCJB TV20, North Central Florida.

In a clip posted by reporter Olivia Eisenhauer on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Ginny Sumrall said that Sumrall “loves pedicures. That’s his favorite extra thing to do. Every two weeks during the football season, Jon loves to get a pedicure.”

As the clip went viral on social media, it drew mixed reactions from fans, with several disagreeing with the coach’s habits.

Sumrall has responded to the video on Sunday, sharing a GIF from Jim Carrey’s “Dumb and Dumber” where the character played by the Oscar-winning actor needs heavy machinery to get his nails clipped.

Sumrall, a Texas native, will be returning to the SEC after his previous stints at Kentucky and Ole Miss as an assistant coach. Before taking the Florida job, Sumrall had multiple winning seasons with Troy and Tulane, including a College Football Playoff appearance with the Green Wave.

At the SEC Media Days last week, Sumrall spoke on the process leading to his hiring at Florida, stating that he was initially unsure if the program would choose him, despite him “killing” the interview.

“My wife, all the kids are in bed. My wife’s barely awake, and she goes, ‘Hey, didn’t you have a call that day with Florida?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ And she goes, ‘How’d it go?’ I said, ‘It went great. Like, I killed it. Like, I dominated,’ and she goes, ‘That’s awesome! Like,that would be such a cool job.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, they’re not going to hire me. Florida does not hire me.’

Sumrall then recalled his journey from watching the 1993 SEC championship game between Alabama and Florida from the stands of Legion Field to becoming the head coach of the program.

“I’m so blessed to sit in one of the jobs that my whole life, not to make this guy next to me feel old, but 1993, I sat in the South End Zone on Legion Field and watched the SEC Championship game. It’s the Florida freaking Gators, you know. And so for me, this is one of those jobs that when they when the process kept going, I’m like, oh, this could be real.”

The Gators, who have not made an SEC Championship Game appearance since 2020, will have high expectations for their new coach, especially looking at his track record.  Urban Meyer was the last coach to win a conference championship with the team in 2008, beating Alabama in a 31-20 thriller.

Florida faces the seventh-toughest schedule in the FBS, per ESPN, and will open their season against Florida Atlantic in Gainesville, followed by a matchup against Campbell. The Gators will then begin their SEC journey on the road at Auburn.
